DeWalt 18V Cordless drills, batteries and chargers

A cordless drill can be one of the handiest tools around the house, and DeWalt makes some of the best around. Of course, along with a cordless drill comes a battery (or batteries) and a charger to maintain the battery charge.

DeWalt has long been known for making great tools, and does an outstanding job with their cordless line. Headed by the cordless drill, there are many optional tools that operate with the same battery and charger such as an impact driver or cordless circular saw; as the battery is one the higher cost items in a cordless drill kit it can save considerable money when more cordless tools are purchased.

DeWalt also offers both a nicad battery as well as the newer lithium batteries. Lithium batteries cost considerably more, but last longer both in use and in lifespan.

The Power of a Cordless Drill?

DeWalt cordless 18V drills

DeWalt offers a variety of drills for various purposes.  All will, of course, drill a hole, and all have a ½" chuck that will accept up to a ½" drill bit.  Although DeWalt offers different voltages of cordless tools, the 18V drills are the most popular and most powerful; all of the cordless drills shown here of the 18V variety.

All the drills feature a torque setting for driving screws without stripping them out, and some offer a hammer drill ability for drilling concrete or masonry.  While these drills cannot compete with a true hammer drill in this ability, they are quite capable of drilling up to a ½" hole in concrete.  These smaller drills tend to eat up drill bits and take considerably longer than a full size hammer drill, but work very will for the occasional smaller hole.

The drills will accept either a nicad or lithium battery, and kits are available with either style of battery.  Drills are available either as a kit, complete with battery and charger or as a stand-alone tool that will require batteries and a charger to use.

DeWalt 18V batteries

The batteries for DeWalt cordless drills are offered in both Lithium ion and Nicad styles, and both compact and full size. The Lithium batteries, while more expensive, last considerably longer during use and have a longer life span.

Compact batteries are available at a lower cost, but do not last nearly as long during usage. If most of the work to be performed is of short duration, the compact batteries can be very nice as they are lighter weight. If longer work periods are expected, either additional low profile batteries or full sized batteries should be purchased. Either way, at least two batteries should be purchased; one for the tool and one for the charger. This way at least one battery can reasonably be expected to be charged and ready for use.  In an ideal world, of course, you should have a battery for every commonly used tool, plus one for the charger.  Even then there will be times when two batteries need charging at the same time; one possible solution is a dual battery charger.  This will not eliminate the problem but will help it considerably.

As either battery can be used in any of the drills, replacement batteries can also be purchased in either lithium or nicad configuration, but be sure that any existing charger you already own will charge the new batteries. If nicad batteries from an older set are to be replaced with lithium ion batteries, a new charger is probably in the works as well.

DeWalt 18V battery chargers

As with the batteries, DeWalt chargers come in two styles; both nicad and lithium. The chargers are not interchangeable - a charger designed for nicad will not charge lithium batteries and the reverse is true as well.

At the same time, however, Dewalt offers one charger that can charge either style of battery in the DC 9310 model. This would be very handy for someone upgrading to lithium batteries that still has some of the older nicad batteries that are usable. Otherwise two chargers would be necessary.

A very nice offering is the charger/radio from DeWalt that will also charge both nicad and lithium batteries. When not plugged in the radio operates off of the battery instead of charging it.
